Big Meadows at Sunrise: A Shenandoah National Park Family Session was one of those mornings that reminded me why I love photographing families there.
Before the sun had even risen, I made my way into the park for this beautiful family session at Big Meadows. We met in the parking lot while the park was still quiet and took a short walk toward the meadow.
As we reached our spot, the first light of the day began to appear over the Blue Ridge Mountains. The sun slowly rose in the distance, creating soft, beautiful light across the meadow. It was peaceful, quiet, and absolutely gorgeous.

As the session went on, we captured this family just as they are right now. M had just turned four and was such a joy to photograph. He was sweet, playful, and full of personality. Those little smiles, expressions, and moments of connection are what make family photos so meaningful.

This family has created such a special tradition when they travel. At each national park they visit, they hire a photographer to document their time together.
I absolutely love this idea. Instead of only coming home with typical vacation photos, they have professional photographs from each adventure that allow them to remember their family during that particular season of life.
Years from now, these photographs will bring them right back to this morning at Big Meadows—the mountains, the sunrise, and their four-year-old son exactly as he was at this moment.

Sunrise is one of my favorite times to photograph families in Shenandoah National Park. The park is usually quiet in the early morning, and there are often very few people around.
For families who are a little shy in front of the camera, this can make a huge difference. Without crowds or people watching, everyone can relax and focus on each other.
Kids can explore and play, parents can enjoy the moment, and I can capture those genuine interactions without the distraction of a busy park.
And then there is the light.
Sunrise gives us soft, beautiful light across the Blue Ridge Mountains and creates a peaceful atmosphere that is hard to beat. It makes the session feel less like a photoshoot and more like a morning adventure together.

This Big Meadows sunrise session was a perfect reminder that family photography doesn’t have to feel stiff or overly posed. Some of the best photographs happen while walking, playing, laughing, and simply being together.
M is only four once. This is what their family looks like right now. And one day, these photographs will tell the story of this little chapter in their lives.
That is what I love most about photographing families in Shenandoah National Park—creating photographs that aren’t just beautiful, but bring you back to a place, a feeling, and a moment you never want to forget.
